Bu gece; ilk buluştuğumuz sahile gittim...
Uzandım kumsala; uzun, uzun gökyüzünü seyrettim...
Sonra sahil boyu yürüdüm biraz, senden bir iz aradım...
Anılar canlandı gözümde; efkarlandım, bir sigara sardım...

Biliyorum, çare değil sensizliğime; fakat yine de bir teselli işte;
Nefes, nefes seni çekiyorum ciğerlerime;
Gitgide artıyor kederim, ne bileyim; bu gece bir tuhaf, bir beterim!...

Denize girdiğin yerden; bir avuç su alıp içtim...
Sana olan susuzluğum geçsin diye;
Fakat nafile; daha beter yanıyor içim...
Yangınlardayım; niye yoksun, niye?

Hasretinden güneşlendiğin yerdeki kum tanelerini avuçlayıp kokladım...
Rüzgâr da getirmiyor kokunu, iyiden iyiye darlandım...

Dalgalar hırçın, deniz hüzün kokuyor... Şafak söküyor, güneş yeniden doğuyor...
Sabah olmuş; farkında değilim...
Geceyi sana yazdım, sevgilim!...

I Wrote the Night to You

Tonight, I went to the shore where we first met...
I lay down on the sand; watched the vast, vast sky...
Then I walked along the shore a bit, searching for a trace of you...
Memories came alive before my eyes; I grew melancholy, rolled a cigarette...

I know it’s no cure for my loneliness; yet still, a small consolation;
Breath by breath, I draw you into my lungs;
My sorrow grows stronger, I don’t know why; tonight feels strange, worse than before...

I took a handful of water from where you entered the sea and drank it...
To quench my thirst for you;
But in vain; my heart burns even more...
I’m in flames; why aren’t you here, why?

I grabbed and smelled the grains of sand where you once basked in the sun...
The wind doesn’t bring your scent; I feel more and more confined...

The waves are rough, the sea smells of sorrow... Dawn breaks, the sun rises again...
Morning has come; I am unaware...
I wrote the night to you, my love!...
